Tri na Móna 2015

Tri na Móna sprint triathlon will be held on Saturday the 22nd of August 2015.

The race is based at Tragumna beach with transition in the car park. It is a sea-start, with competitors swimming around the island in the bay, back to the beach and transition in the car park.

Swim Trag

The bike route route consists of an 18.5km circuit. Starting in from the transition at Tragumna and heading towards Skibbereen, turning right at the lodge and on to the lake cross. Instead of heading to Skibbereen, cyclists will turn right and head in the direction of Castletownshend. From the lake cross it is approx. 5km to Castletownshend. Here there will be a sharp right turn bringing cyclists along the coast road for the remaining 9km back to transition.

Tragumna Sprint Cycle Course

The run is a 5km out-and-back Route. It is a flat course heading towards Skibbereen for 2.5km as far as what is known locally as “The Lodge”. Competitors turn here and head back the same 2.5km route towards transition.

RUN for Cycle Against Suicide 2015

As some of you may already know, the Cycle Against Suicide route passes through Bantry, Skibbereen, Clonakilty, and all points in between this coming May. Bantry & Skibb will actually be start/finish towns for the cycle, with Clonakilty being the scheduled lunch stop en route to Cork city. Route details here.

On top of that, event organiser Jim Breen now plans to RUN the entire 1,400 km route 4 weeks in advance of the scheduled cycle in order to further raise awareness of the campaign message –

“It’s ok to not feel ok, and it’s absolutely ok to ask for help”

The run route passes through West Cork from the 7th – 11th April 2015, stopping in Clon, Skibb, Bantry, (and even Schull!). See full details of the route and schedule here.

West Cork Tri have been asked, along with Clonakilty Roadrunners AC and Parkrun Clonakilty, to lend their support to the event. The plan is to organise a 5k fun run in each of the departure towns, with an estimated start time of 09:00. At the moment, it looks like a lap of Clonakilty if the numbers are small, or a few laps of the Parkrun circuit if there’s a good uptake. Obviously, that’s just Clon, and we’d hope that our colleagues out West will rise to the challenge in their own localities!!

Typically, at the end of each day, a mental health presentation will take place in local community halls, businesses, etc. Personally speaking, I did part of the cycle in 2013, and the calibre of guest speakers was excellent. The day I cycled, Ireland & Munster rugby legend Mick O’Driscoll spoke about the life pressures that his move to USA Perpignan back in 2003 brought. I think I missed Alan Quinlan the day before, and yer man Bressie was knocking around the place somewhere too.

There’s a bit of discussion to be had to iron out a few details. There’s also great potential for promoting our clubs too, as RTE will be doing a bit of filming also. So start talking and spread the word!

Fastnet Duathlon 2015

Well done to club members competing at last weekend’s Fastnet Duathlon in less than ideal conditions, especially for a bike leg that normally gets a bit of the prevailing wind even on calmer days.

WCTC members Brian Harrington, Cillian McCabe, Don O’Leary, and Steve Anderson took to the start line on Saturday morning. Special mention & well done must go to Don and Steve, taking part in their first TI event as WCTC members!!

Last but not least, Brian is justifying his qualification for the Age Group World & European Championships this year, putting in a fine performance to net 11th overall and 1st place in his age category.

Club Contact Email Updated – Web Contact Form Working Again

We had a bit of a glitch lately with the club email and Contact Form on the website. Apologies to anyone who’s message has drifted off into the ether…

The good news is that the Contact Form is working again. Also, if you’d like to just write an email to us the old-fashioned way, you can contact WCTC at

Thanks, Dan
